Charges

What a drayage bill is made of.

The line haul is rarely the part that surprises people. These are the additional charges the industry calls accessorials, what each one is actually for, and which of them you can avoid. We name ours at tender rather than after the move.

Waiting time is charged when a driver sits beyond the free waiting period at your dock or at the terminal. It is the most common surprise on a drayage invoice and the easiest to prevent, usually by booking a drop instead of a live unload.

A chassis split is charged when the container and a usable chassis are not together and someone has to make an extra move to marry them. It is a second trip, so it is priced like one.

A dry run is charged when a truck arrives and the container cannot be released, usually because of a hold or a missing release. The trip happened even though the box did not move.

Storage, demurrage and per diem are not ours. They are the terminal's and the line's, they are set by your contract with the line, and they pass through. We flag them the day we see them rather than the week the invoice arrives.

Avoidable, with notice
  • Waiting time: tell us live or drop at tender
  • Dry run: send the booking early so we can check releases
  • Second attempt: confirm the appointment window
  • Chassis split: depends on the line and the pool
  • Demurrage and per diem: depends on your free time

Ask for the accessorial list with your rate. Any carrier that will not give you one in writing is telling you something.

Questions

Before you tender.

Which ramps do you pull from?
CN Brampton and CPKC Vaughan. Delivery runs across the GTA, Ontario, and on lanes into Quebec.
Are CN Brampton and CPKC Vaughan the same terminal?
No. CN Brampton is the Brampton Intermodal Terminal, in Peel Region. CPKC Vaughan is in York Region.
Who moves the container?
A load accepted by Setara Transport is not passed to another carrier without your written consent. We do not re-broker. If we cannot cover a load, we say so when it is tendered.
